Over the past 40 years I have perfected the art of pokerwork (also known as pyrography) and have appeared on BBC television and radio demonstrating this unusual art form.  My designs are burned into oak table tops on items such as nests of three tables, lounge tables, occasional coffee tables, refractory tables, magazine tables etc.

The designs are burned with an old fashioned soldering iron before being coloured with wood dyes to give a true life effect.  They are then varnished and polished with beeswax to protect them from normal use.

This craft also lends itself to working on leather and I produce leather pictures and panels for display cabinets.  I have even been commissioned to work on panels for old church doors to be fitted into a mausoleum.

Following a request from a customer I was asked to burn a flying pheasant design onto a toilet seat lid with scattered feathers and the words “Good Shot” on the underside.  This idea took off, just like the pheasant and now I produce a range of designs with humorous inscriptions under the lid.  These include Fox with “Gone to Ground” on the underside, Salmon and Trout with “Missed Again”, Running Cock Pheasant with “Running Cock”, Owl with “Winking” Owl underneath and various others.  These are available in antique pine, mahogany and solid oak (light and dark).

A new line has recently been introduced being children’s stools.  These are oak stools with four turned legs approximately 10” high and 8” in diameter.  Designs include rabbit, guinea pig, squirrel, mouse and badger and child’s name and date of birth can be inscribed around the edge.
